CNA Letter on Highway 30 Safety

Posted on October 13, 2020 by Web Manager Posted in Uncategorized

The Concordia Neighborhood Association sent this letter to decision-makers, following a series of recent fatal crashes on North Portland Highway / Highway 30 Bypass:

Hwy_30_Safety_Letter_CNA-Sept_2020-signed

To date, we have only received supportive responses from Congressman Earl Blumenauer, and Metro Councilor Sam Chase. No other decision-maker has had the common decency to even reply, much less join the coalition seeking solutions for the conditions on this deadly facility.

CNA LUTC Draft Agenda: Wed, May 20, 2020

Posted on May 14, 2020 by Web Manager Posted in Uncategorized

Hi folks,

We held our second fully-virtual CNA LUTC meeting last month (April), and it seems we’re getting used to this thing now, things are working well. Not only do you no longer even need to leave your house to attend, but you don’t even have to feel guilty about that, because nobody else is leaving their house to attend the meeting physically, either!

And yet, all of this distancing is also increasing the levels of social isolation in our community. Once the time comes, it really will do us all a lot of good to spend some time outside in the nice weather, hanging out with our neighbors, both those we know already, and those we are about to meet.

Following on a conversation the Board had on this topic in April, the LUTC will discuss the potential for block parties that close the street to allow for safe socializing for neighbors. We’ll have Kim Harrison from PBOT joining us to hear our thoughts, goals, and ideas, which she will bring back to the Portland in the Streets group to consider as they work on next steps for the block party, play streets, and other programs they offer.

To join our April meeting, on Wednesday, May 20th at 7pm, use this login information:

Web:

https://meet.google.com/ocg-wgut-iki

For security reasons (to prevent Zoombombing-type incidents):

If you’re joining us for the first time by web at this meeting, please just email your address (or nearest cross street) within the neighborhood to: landuse (at) concordiapdx (dot) org

Phone:

See attached for the draft agenda.

cheers,

Concordians share their memories of CU

Posted on April 1, 2020 by Gordon Riggs Posted in Uncategorized

CNews asked readers to send their memories of Concordia University to share with the community at this time of grief about institution closing. Below are some of the submissions.

If you have any to share, post them on Facebook.com/groups/ConcordiaPDX.

Karen (Sasser) Wrye

Karen (Sasser) Wrye Concordia University has been a part of my life for many years. My family moved to Portland in 1945. I grew up on 27th and walked past the campus on my way to Faubion to grade school.

We neighborhood kids also played on the campus. When it was time for college, I attended there to study to be a teacher.

After graduating, I lived out of state for eight years. In 1972, I moved back to Portland when my husband accepted a position to teach in the high school department at Concordia.

I have lived in the Concordia neighborhood since then. For 12 years, I was an adjunct instructor at Concordia University. Over the years I have witnessed the many changes and additions to the campus.

All my memories as neighbor, student and instructor are too many to list. A few of my favorites are singing in the Concordia College Choir, attending concerts and sporting events over the years, visiting the library and walking across campus on my treks through the neighborhood.

I live close enough to campus that, in recent years, I have enjoyed the music of the carillon. I grieve the closing of Concordia University and wonder what will take its place as my neighbor.

Dick Wrye

Dick Wrye The first five years I lived in the Concordia neighborhood of Portland, I taught in the high school department of Concordia College and High School. The high school then moved off the Concordia campus and became Lutheran High School.

At Concordia I taught music, primarily choir and band. Many of those students are still my friends. I am glad to have memories of the many years of teaching.

Georgina Sharadin Sievers

My parents, Don and Dolores Sharadin, built their house on 27th and Liberty in 1951 to send all their future children to Concordia High School — an all-boys high school, then a junior college, which later became a university.

They had five daughters, but fortunately the high school turned co-ed in 1968. Four of the five girls attended there, met their future husbands on the campus, and they were married in the chapel in Luther Hall.

After the girls left home, the Sharadins – who have seen tremendous changes to the campus – continued to support the growing university, and even rented bedrooms out to other students throughout the years.

Dolores received Concordia’s first Lux Christi Award, given to an outstanding educator for the Lutheran Church. Don couldn’t stay away from attending all the sporting events on campus. The Sharadins still maintain occupancy of the big yellow house. The landscape has changed immensely with the stadium, the library, the gym and campus apartments.

I taught swim classes as an adjunct professor, son-in-law Ken is the head of maintenance, granddaughter Karen is the campus nurse and great-granddaughter Atley is a freshman on the campus.

Sadly to say, we are all heartbroken. But we are thankful for the nearly 70 years our family has been a part of this Concordia community.

Smell something foul? Report it with the new Smell MyCity app!

Posted on November 18, 2019 by Web Manager Posted in Uncategorized
For years, residents of Concordia have complained about smells, from natural gas, to diesel exhaust, and even emissions from the airport. Until now, there hasn’t been an easy way to take action when you smell something noxious:
Announcing a new free app for reporting possible industrial air pollution incidents to Portland Clean Air!
Please help with this launch by downloading the app today and making a smell report- even if the smell report is positive.
Portland Clean Air has been working with Dr. Beatrice Dias from Carnegie Melon University, the developer of the app and Seventh Generation is helping to launch the app city wide.
The Smell MyCity app crowdsources community reports of pollution odors and visualizes our city’s air quality. Please help us with this launch by downloading the app today and making a smell report. Even if your report is an entirely positive one (which we all hope it is!) your report today will help us a lot on the receiving end. This is a better alternative than your complaints being ignored by DEQ or floating around Nextdoor. Portland Clean Air now has a toxic smell response team with monitoring equipment and the data from nine agencies to help pinpoint the source so Portland Clean Air can send in negotiators.

The Smell MyCity app is available on the App Store and on Google Play.
There is no fee to download the app – it’s free!
Click here for the iOS app
Click here for the Android app

The Smell MyCity website makes smell report data publicly accessible and easy for all residents and community groups to explore. You can visit the map visualization page to see how smell reports are distributed across the city over time. In addition, the data access page enables anyone to download smell report data for further analysis.
