Cully Camina invites you to ‘walk, go, trot, wend your way’

Posted on September 4, 2016 by Web Manager Posted in Concordia News, Events

The Cully Association of Neighbors and Oregon Walks are partnering Sept. 18 for the first of a new series of free, pedestrian-focused open streets events. The 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cully Camina will encourage participants to explore the Cully neighborhood on foot and use the streets for play in Oregon Walks’ new Oregon Walkways program.

What’s a camina? Loosely translated, it’s the Spanish word to walk, go, trot, home in on and/or wend one’s way.

Inspired by the success of the city of Portland’s Sunday Parkways, this event will close off portions of Killingsworth Street and Alberta Court to cars and open them to people. The route will highlight the newly minted Living Cully Plaza and the forthcoming 42nd Avenue Plaza, with activities along Cully Blvd, Alberta Street and Alberta Court, especially in and around Khunamokwst Park. Booths for food and art vendors as well as local nonprofits will be located near both plaza areas.

Volunteers, vendors and participants are all invited. Volunteers are needed on the planning and outreach teams, and to direct traffic.

Potential vendors may email Inna Levin.

Sponsors already include: Metro, the city of Portland, Our 42nd Avenue, Living Cully, Verde, Hacienda CDC, Andando en Bicicleta en Cully and City Repair and individuals who live and work in the neighborhood.

Oregon Walks is a pedestrian advocacy organization that works to ensure walking and the conditions for walking are safe, convenient and attractive for everyone. Learn more about Cully Camina.

Showcasing the best of the Alberta Street community, the event features entertainment, music, vendors, and food and drink for people of all ages. Hosted by Alberta Main Street, the event continues to be one of Portland’s most beloved neighborhood street festivals and draws more than 25,000 people.

The fair will kick off with the Sixth Annual Children’s Parade, starting promptly at 11 a.m. at 15th Avenue and ending at the Center Stage at 21st Avenue. Participants meet at 10:30 a.m. at the Alberta Co-op parking lot at 15th Avenue.

Additional event highlights include:

  • Kid’s Activity Corner, hosted all day by PDX Parent at 18th Avenue, provides crafty fun and entertainment for children of all ages

National Night Out to include parade, music, fun!

Posted on July 1, 2016 by Gordon Riggs Posted in Arts & Culture, Concordia News, Events

Neighbors are invited to join in on the National Night Out Celebration on the evening of Tues., August 2nd.

This unique community event will be fun for the whole family with a focus on community building to prevent crime and fear of crime. National Night Out is held on the first Tuesday of August every year around the country and is designed to strengthen neighborhood spirit and community partnerships, generate support for participation in local anti-crime programs, heighten community awareness of crime and drug prevention, and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Our neighborhood celebration will begin at 6 p.m. with a pedestrian and bicycle parade at Dekum Court, Home Forward’s Public Housing Community, located at NE 25th & Saratoga. The parade will wind its way to Fernhill Park via Dekum, NE 33rd Avenue, Ainsworth St., and NE 37th Avenue. We hope to see everyone, individually or in groups, get out and join the parade. Children and adults, marching bands, sports teams, church and civic groups, city officials, dance troupes and kazoo bands are all welcome! We will have a bicycle decoration station at Dekum Court beginning at 5 p.m., so bring your bikes, trikes, and strollers and get creative! The celebration will continue at Fernhill Park with the last concert of our free Summer Concert Series, Wanderlust Circus Orchestra at 6:30 p.m.
