CNA Formally Opposes Colwood Re-Zoning: How You Can Help

Posted on March 20, 2008 by Gordon Riggs Posted in Archive, CNA, Land Use & Transportation

As you read earlier, there is a hearing on March 24th to re-zone Colwood Golf Course for industrial uses. The loss of this green space in favor of more airport facilities will have quite an effect on Concordia and the local air and water sheds as well as noise abatement concerns. The CNA formally resolved to oppose the proposal – you can download and read our written testimony.

CNA opposition is powerful, but we also need to participate as individuals to make our voices heard. You can take action by doing one (or both!) of the following:

Go to the hearing:

March 24, 2008, 1:30 PM
1900 SW Fourth Ave.
Suite 3000, Portland, OR 97201

Send in or fax your testimony:

Land Use Hearings Officer
1900 SW Fourth Ave.
Suite 3100
Portland, OR 97201
FAX 503-823-4347

If you submit written testimony route include this file number:

LU 05-138386 CP ZC PC # 04-065296

We also recommend cc:ing the Mayor and Commissioners if you send
in written testimony.

The forum will start promptly at 6:30pm and end at 9:00pm. This will be hosted in the McMenamins Kennedy School Gym, and McMenamins will have pizza and beverages available for purchase during the event.

In order to educate ourselves about the candidates, their positions on the issues, and to make them aware of the issues and concerns we have regarding northeast Portland and the city as a whole, this forum present a great opportunity to access the people that shape our community.

  • Charles Lewis
  • Chris Smith
  • Mike Fahey

Colwood Golf Course Re-Zoned For Industrial Use? Hearing, March 24

Posted on March 10, 2008 by Gordon Riggs Posted in Archive, Land Use & Transportation

There is a hearing on March 24th to re-zone Colwood Golf Course for industrial uses. The loss of this green space in favor of more airport facilities will have quite an effect on Concordia and the local air and water sheds as well as noise abatement concerns. Attending the hearing would be a great way to make sure our interest in protecting our neighborhood environment is considered.

The public hearing regarding the proposal will be at 1:30 p.m. March 24, at the Fourth Avenue Building, at 1900 S.E. Fourth Ave., Suite 3000.

Art on Alberta Kick-off with Synergy Theme for 2008

Posted on February 26, 2008 by Gordon Riggs Posted in Archive, Events

Neighbors, business owners, artists, and other interested parties, including Sam Adams, packed Zaytoon on February 13th, for the Art on Alberta annual meeting.

Last year’s theme for the May’s Art Hop, was “Eyes on Alberta.” The theme’s mission was accomplished. Sam Adams congratulated Art on Alberta at its success in branding itself. He said that the Alberta Arts District is second only to the Pearl with its high profile in the Portland arts scene. However, the mostly volunteer and under-funded organization can no longer do it alone. Thus, they have launched the new 2008 theme of “Synergy.”

According to a blind survey by Portland State University (PSU), neighbors are proud to have community art events and want the Art Hop to continue largely as it has been. President of Art on Alberta, Joseph Blanchette, said that they were a little surprised by positive response, which has given the organization energy and information to help ensure the event’s progress and success in future years.

Chair’s Corner – March 2008

Posted on February 25, 2008 by Gordon Riggs Posted in Archive, Events

by Tony Fuentes, CNA Vice-Chair

As I read the local papers and listen to the news, there have been two big things on my mind lately. The first is the recent gang incidents that have occurred in Northeast and North Portland.

The gang problem is complex and we must strive to fully address it. We need to create an environment and choices in our homes, in our neighborhoods, in our schools, in our job market, and in our social circles that provide the knowledge and support our young people need to succeed. We also need to work together to help address immediate day-to-day concerns related to gang activity.

So what can you do? One small but important thing is keeping the police and city informed of what is happening. For instance, be sure to document and report all graffiti – all it takes is a call to the graffiti hotline at 503-823-4824. And it is critical that all criminal incidents and suspicious activity be reported to the police no matter how minor it may seem. For instance, public drinking, disruptive house parties, car prowls, any public display of weapons, and illegal drug use should always be reported without hesitation. The bottom-line is that if you see something, say something. Emergencies should always be reported to 9-1-1, non-emergency issues and suspicious activity can be reported to the non-emergency line at 503-823-3333.

Another thing I have been thinking about is the upcoming elections, the CITY elections. Not as glamorous as the presidential race but the decisions made by the city council always impact your day-to-day life and affect the overall livability of our neighborhood.

To help inform your decision on council members, the Concordia Neighborhood Association will be holding a forum on April 1 featuring candidates for commissioner positions 1 and 2. I hope that we fill the Gym at the Kennedy School with Concordia neighbors that night. This will be a unique chance to learn more about the candidates and their stand on the issues facing our fair city and our neighborhood.

Got a burning question for the candidates that can’t wait until April 1? Go ahead and ask the candidates – really. Most are accessible by email or phone or both and if they want to be a commissioner, they better be open to dealing with the public, right?

As part of the planning committee preparing for this forum, I can say that we are definitely open to suggestions on questions about local issues. So feel free to also email me your hot topic as well.

Get Involved At The March General Meeting!

Posted on February 24, 2008 by Gordon Riggs Posted in Archive, CNA, Events

The themes of the March General Meeting (Tuesday, March 4th at 7:00 P.M.) are sharing and learning: we want you to share your opinion on a wide variety of issues that the Concordia Neighborhood Association (CNA) is addressing while you learn more about our current opportunities to get involved.

To accomplish this, we will have presentations from leaders within CNA plus presentations and from our neighborhood community policing officer. In addition, Concordia University will present their concept for streetlight banners to be installed throughout the area surrounding campus.

Greg Harris, Director of Marketing for Concordia University, will present their proposal. Mr. Harris shared the preliminary design for the banners along with a map of proposed locations to CNA board members at the January CNA board meeting. Aside from the Concordia University logo, each banner would have a word associated with the university. These themes include “Think,” “Faith,” “Transform,” “Respect,” and “Serve.”

The CNA board asked Mr. Harris to present at the March general meeting before it took a formal position on the banners and their placement. In general, individual board members found the banner designs attractive while some expressed concerns about the placement of the banners on Ainsworth Avenue. We want to hear from you, so please listen to what our neighbors at Concordia University are proposing and share your thoughts.
