CNA Holiday Party Tuesday, December 7th, 2010 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Posted on November 18, 2010 by Gordon Riggs Posted in Archive, CNA, Events

The ANNUAL CNA HOLIDAY PARTY is just around the corner, so please mark your calendars! Once again, Concordia University has generously donated their Student Event and Activity Center (SEAC) for our event, which is located on the 2nd floor of the Hagen Campus Center (Building #3).

Download a map of the Concordia University Campus.

There is an elevator to the 2nd floor for those folks who are unable to use the stairs. All residents and business owners of the Concordia Neighborhood are invited to the free holiday festivities on Tuesday, December 7th in lieu of our General Meeting. The holiday party is a great way to meet new neighbors and mix and mingle with friends, old and new, in a festive and family-friendly atmosphere.

This year Concordia University’s Brass Ensemble led by Dr. William Kuhn is going to be playing between about 6:30 and 7:15pm. We are also delighted to be serving homemade Mexican food provided by Rosie Gomez. The CNA will also be providing nonalcoholic beverages. Additionally, we will be having a cookie decoration station for children so they can create their own tasty treats. New this year will be the Pie Walk for neighbors of all ages. The lucky winners will take home a delicious pie donated by some of our local businesses.

Also, we are pleased to announce that one of our own CNA Board members, Isham Harris, will be leading us in a few festive holiday songs. If you would like to participate in providing additional music for our event, please contact Katie at 503-449-9690. We hope to see you all there for this fun end-of-the-year event!

Alberta Main Street Visioning Seeks Community Input

Posted on October 18, 2010 by Gordon Riggs Posted in Archive, Land Use & Transportation, Local Businesses

On June 18th, Mayor Sam Adams named Alberta Street one of the first three Portland Main Street Districts, which will be the first urban Green Main Street program in the country. The Main Street program is closely tied to the Portland Economic Development Strategy, which calls out 20-minute neighborhoods, vibrant commercial corridors and healthy neighborhood businesses as a key objective.

The holistic nature of the Main Street approach is what prompted the Alberta Street Business Association to apply for the program on behalf our community. will bring together residents, business owners, commercial property owners, non-profit & faith-based leaders to create and implement intentional development in our community. The Alberta program area includes parts of Concordia, King and Vernon neighborhoods.

Sara Wittenberg started as the Executive Director on September 6, 2010 and has been working with the Board to get the word out about opportunities for community involvement. Sara’s mantra is, “Alberta Main Street will only be as strong as the community investment in it! We need your help.”

Liquor License Renewal – North of Burnside

Posted on October 13, 2010 by Gordon Riggs Posted in Archive

All liquor licenses North of Burnside within the Portland City Limits (East &West) will expire on January 1st, 2011, unless renewed by the Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC). As part of the renewal process, the City of Portland makes recommendations to the OLCC on renewal applications using information gathered from neighbors, community organizations, and public safety officials. The City of Portland is home to approximately 2,500 liquor license establishments, about half of which are coming up for renewal. Neighbors, Neighborhood and Business Associations, and Community Organizations have a very important role in this process.

The annual renewal is an opportunity for communities to address problems or concerns with licensed establishments in their neighborhoods. Concerned neighbors and community organizations wishing to oppose a license renewal North of Burnside should advise the Office of Neighborhood Involvement as soon as possible. Licensed establishments not identified by the City of Portland as problems are processed as though they received a “favorable” recommendation. Opposition received by individuals and organizations is considered by the City before a recommendation is made to the OLCC. If neighbors have concerns but do not wish to formally oppose the license renewal, this is an excellent opportunity to engage in problem solving to address concerns informally.

Information about liquor establishments with ongoing problems must be received by November 5th, 2010.
